Now entering into the 29th year, the Society of Publishers In Asia has grown from strength to strength and continues to promote the best industry practices and facilitate a favourable environment for professional publishing.
2011 sees the publishing industry almost back on terra firma with many publishers increasing pages, raising advertising rates, hiring, and embracing new technologies and platforms - witness the dramatic effect that the iPad and Galaxy TAB has already had on the publishing industry.
As the industry continues to grow healthier, SOPA will be embarking on a vigorous programme to encourage new local, regional and international publishers to become members. Part of this programme will involve the re-introduction of events that will allow members and non-members an opportunity to network, exchange views on emerging issues, trends, technology and business strategies.
We also intend to bring back the SOPA Publisher's Ball towards the end of 2011 so standby for more news about that later.
And of course, the prestigious SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence - Asia's highest accolade in recognition of journalistic excellence.
Last year, the annual SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence saw a record number of judges (109) assessing 564 entries from 100 publications. In a change this year, we are delighted that Hong Kong University's Journalism and Media Studies Centre will administer the Awards. The closing date for submissions is 15 February 2011.
With 2011 being a new year and the start of a brand new decade, I am delighted to be elected Chairman of SOPA, thank the Board and welcome all new Board members.
May I wish you all the greatest of success in 2011!

David E. Smith
Chairman - SOPA
