Message from the Chairman

Over the past 28 years, SOPA has dedicated itself to preserving freedom of the press in the Asia region and to ensuring that independent, quality journalism is observed, encouraged and acknowledged. Our mission is an uncompromising dedication to responsible journalism with integrity that is the cornerstone of every free society.

Today publishers are faced with new challenges to their traditional business models, with more content available online and developments such as online video, reporter blogs and reader feedback, augmenting and expanding existing print based stories. These changes add a new dimension to the publishing business and are being embraced and acted upon.

Another challenge has been the economic backdrop with tough business conditions creating headwinds for the business for much of the year. But 2010 should bring better times with the upswing in the economic cycle. Membership numbers for SOPA increased by 15 percent last year despite the downturn.

SOPA will continue to expand our outreach programs in Asia including the "SOPA 2010 Awards for Editorial Excellence" which has just launched. We also plan to host further SOPA Media Summits such as the one held in Beijing under the theme "The Future of Publishing - New Platforms, New Technologies, New Models". The SOPA Media Insiders continue to be well received.

With new Board members joining I look forward to building on our achievements. SOPA provides an important platform for Asian and international publishers to network and collaborate on common industry issues. SOPA is committed to facilitating the exchange of best industry practices across all publishing platforms.

Here's to a successful 2010.
